This year is shaping up to be a good year for camping:

Kinja'd!!!

Just booked our campsites in Yellowstone for the summer with the family and my brothers family. My wife and I were there in 2008 but this will be the kids first time.

Kinja'd!!!

Booked sites on the White Rim 9 days away. Should be interesting in the winter.

Kinja'd!!!

Possible Capitol reef trip with the family and my wife’s sister’s family in April. (Always a crowd pleaser)

2 are full family affairs, 1 is me and my oldest only and 1 is no family, but yeah I’m stoked to get out there with the family again.

I just booked our site on the north shore of Lake Superior for mid July. So excited!

I went to Yellowstone for the first time a few years ago, I enjoyed it quite a bit but I enjoyed Glacier much more. I feel it had to do with the more mountainous and forest-y feel of Glacier compared to Yellowstone’s rolling plains (with some mountains of course). I’m sure the fewer people that were at Glacier helped make it feel more relaxed as well. Though something needs to be said about the absolutely amazing wildlife that reside within Yellowstone. Something I won’t forget for sure. One day I hope to make it out west again, I absolutely fell in love with Western Montana when we were out there.

I also preferred Glacier, but its a road trip too far for a 4 and 2 year old.

Yeah, for us it was even more a trip. Something around 2,300 miles to Glacier for me.

Yellowstone is one of my favorite places. If you have the time I highly recommend taking the kido’s to the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. They have the largest fossilized T-Rex skull in the world.

Sounds like a really nice set of trips.

I’ve got a two week Washington to Phoenix and back by way of Death Valley, Mojave and the PCH with my siblings coming up in two months and a week on the WABDR with my 5 year old early in the summer. Got one week and a half stretch I still haven’t planned later in the summer. Thinking I might go screw around in eastern Oregon and over into Idaho a bit or run all over Vancouver Island instead, still very much undecided.

Trying to find a thread something semi-related to my question, jalopnik really needs a message system.

Anyways, I also drive a 97 Cruiser 40th edition, the rims are starting to fade a bit and they are also starting to corrode. I was wondering if you had any opinion on a different rim that might look good on the cruiser?

I have a friend at work that just replaced his tacoma rims and tires and bought something different, might be able to buy his old ones but not sure how they would look. (same as the ones below).

Thanks,

Mr. BananaWatermelon

My rims are also starting to corrode but after consulting with a toyota engineer on the matter I’m not concerned...I guess it’s just aesthetics and that doesn’t worry me greatly. That being said I’ve studied the idea of steel wheels and found procomps that I like. Taco wheels won’t work because the backspacing will bring the tires too far in. If I recall ours are 16x8, 6 on 5.5 pattern with 0 offset and 4.5 inch backspacing. Don’t go too far off with those specs (backspacing and offset really) if you want it to handle normal. Stock Tacoma trd are: 16x7, +32 mm offset, 5.25" backspacing. Not sure about bore centers. Stock Tacoma are narrower with too much offset and backspacing

Thanks for all of the info! Didn’t think about any of that. Looks like this page covers all of it, http://www.belletire.com/wheels-for-veh… . It’s hard to tell how any of these will look on the cruiser without a picture.

Also, not really sure the difference between 6 on 5.5 pattern vs. 6 on 139.7 pattern

139.7 mm = 5.5 inches. and no problem! I recently went through all this with a buddy of mine who wanted wheels with less backspacing for his Tacoma and we discovered that the Cruiser wheels are prefect for him, if i were to get new wheels they might work well for him.

Ok last question (probably not). Do you know the max tire size that will fit on stock suspension? I won’t be off-roading anytime soon and need new tires so I’m looking into these, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.js…

I was running 285/75R16 on EXTREMELY worn out stock coils for about a year, including some wheelin’ No rubbing anywhere.

You can go full 33 without troubles.

Ok I lied (knew I would), I’m back with another question. I know it’s hard to tell much about a tire without actually using it but what would be your general opinion on this one, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.js… .

And yes I hate tire shopping, too many options.

Great tires, long lasting and versitile. You still have questions left on your account if you need.

I have some gm 4x4 rallyees that are 3.75 backspace in the garage would look pretty cool on a cruiser.

Update.......Going to keep the same rims, will clean them up a little bit and put on a fresh coat of paint (just on the inside darker part). Also doing a 180 on tires....I’m going to buy a set of 285/75/r16 terra grapplers. My dad has them on his truck and says they have been great with regular rotation; they have lasted him 55k+ miles for the past several sets. Also a bonus is that he can get them through his company for 30-45 bucks off retail price each so I’ll be saving some there too.

Next topic...speakers. I’m assuming you still don’t have the stock speakers like me. It’s time to revamp my audio system.

Did you replace them or did you hire a professional? Do you know if you have to take off the door panels? How many of them did you replace? I’m thinking it will be enough to just replace the 4 door side speakers?

I still have the stock head unit too (holy crap right?). How difficult was it to bypass that security system thing?

I have factory speakers (i think, havent really bothered to look) and the po put in a double din nav unit, but doing the audio is a snap, as is getting the door panals off, which ive done a couple of times for other reasons. Most good stores will ship a harness that mates your new stereo to your old interface making it literally plug and play and the space is perfect for a double din nav unit. The only thing that you need to consider for replacing speakers is finding quality units that meet the depth requirment, check on ih8mud.com qnd you will find some good suggestions. Im not in love with my sound (its okay but just) but going the distance to make it sound great is actually a lot of work (lots of dynamat and a new sub solution) and so i can live with it. If you do decide to add a sub, iron pig (i think) makes an 8 inch sub mount bracket for the stock sub location
